Bowl Rivierduinen

The foundation of the object ‘Rivierduinen’ are river boulders, gold and glass. The glass is like water around the river boulders because of the melting process. The river boulders give the object it‘s base shape for fusing the glass. This glass is carefully heated in a glass oven to 850 degrees Celsius over the course of three days and then slowly cooled down. During this process the float glass slowly smooths itself over the river boulders, which are coated with a powder as to not be in touch with the glass directly. The glass itself consists of two 4 mm thick layers, between which gold leaf is applied, which shapes along with the glass over the boulders while in the oven.

The design of multifunctional lighting Waaggebouw (1657), leiden

In the Boterhuis these tubes form a unity with the round and straight contours of the high doors with lighting from above. The ends are blue, referring to the Lazzurro wall lamp (a ‘flaming torch’ by the entrance). In the Waag he has made use of the existing architectural form: the tubes follow the course of the insides of the arch vaults in the colonnade on the opposite sides of the room. In this way, through the cupolas and the walls, the whole room is indirectly lit, with the accent on the galleries.

A monument for 100 years of Pope

An installation on the place where the factory stood to keep its memory alive. Van Nieuwenborg has placed at the four corners of the old factory site light boxes designed as showcases. These are placed deep in the ground to use the electric cables from the street lights. The showcases are made of steel with a reinforced glass plate covering them. Each box has its own theme - historical, socio-cultural, technical meaning of Pope and finally its contemporary meaning (the new factory). The showcases are softly lit, which is a further parallel with the light factory. They are patented and can also be used in other commercial projects.
The project can be seen at the old factory site at the corner of the Mercatorsingel and the Keltenstraat. At the back of the old factory site is the Deken van Oppensingel, where the museum Van Bommel Van Dam is located.
Light installation for Council archives, Leiden

Van Nieuwenborg was inspired by the intimate character of the public spaces and the closed-in character of activities in an archive. Both are based on a reflection of today by studying yesterday. Thus he used the natural light spectrum (red, blue and green). Three different light sources are brought together in a light construction with mirrors and so installed that the objects or people in the stream of light reflect coloured shadows in different directions and tones. With this installation van Nieuwenborg has used light as a metaphor for history.
